When your new puppy comes home a new pack will need to be formed…..
Not to worry. The puppies whole world has been turned upside down. You may notice that your puppy rolls over on her back or may even hump a toy or another dog. Puppy/dogs communicate through “body language”. If the puppy rolls over on her back she’s being submissive to you or if humping the humping is not sexual it’s a sign on attempting to dominate. Dogs like humans want and like structure. They are pack animals and when the pack changes (ie she just left her pack, mom and litter mates) and is now in a new pack at your house. Humping and exposing their tummy are methods dogs use to determine the order of the pack. If your puppy had attempted to hump another family pet and that animal scolded him and made her stop then your dog or other pet would be more dominant if he didn’t then the puppy by default would be. Every pack needs an alpha and omega and there is a certain amount of chaos until the order is determined. The puppy is trying to figure this out. The human owner or owners must be the alphas and the pack must be submissive to them. In the pack she just left her mother was the alpha. In the case of coming into your home and due to the fact that she is a baby and new to your pack it’s good for you to exert approval and or authority. If you see her her humping then kindly tell her no and pick her up and pet or cuddle with her for a minute or two. If she rolls over then reach down and kindly pet her and also pick her and comfort and reassure her. Allow her and your pack time to settle. With a little patience and understanding everything will be fine. And the new pack will be happy and we’ll adjusted.
