Origin
A Goldendoodle (sometime referred to as a hybrid or designer dog) is a Golden Retriever and Poodle cross. Goldendoodle, also called Doodles, Dudes and Golden Poodles, have been bred in the US since roughly 1995 or 96. It didn’t take long for them to be recognized as the wonderful, beautiful and intelligent dog that they are and their popularity began to grow dramatically.
Since the smaller poodles had been such a success in filling the niche for small, allergy friendly family pets, some breeders decided to try a breeding smaller Golden Retrievers with a smaller (or mini) poodles to develop smaller Goldendoodle. The quick rise of the popularity of Goldendoodle and Mini Goldendoodle is due to the dogs themselves, they are an amazing breed as you will discover to more you get to know about them.
Ancestry
The Goldendoodle's ancestry along both parent lines is as “working dog” or “field dogs” or more specifically hunter/retrievers and water dogs. The appearance of the Goldendoodle can be anywhere from a shaggy-looking retriever to a curl-relaxed poodle, but usually falls somewhere in between. The length of their hair (yes they have hair not fur) when left uncut grows to about 4-6 inches. The color of the coat can be cream, gold, strawberry blond, chocolate, gray, black and what called a party color which is a mix of colors. Most Goldendoodle have a Standard Poodle as a parent, and are standard sized which can run 40 to 60 for a female and 60 to 80 pounds for the males. Those with a miniature Poodle as a parent are about 25-35 pounds for the females and 30-40 pounds for the males and are called miniature Goldendoodle.

Most Goldendoodle are light to non-shedding, and most are great pets for with families with mild allergies. Families with moderate to severe allergies often find that Goldendoodle backcrosses like the F1b, F2 & F2b can work well. Goldendoodle and Mini Goldendoodle are an intelligent, kind, playful and obedient family members. They seem to be everybody's friend and very devoted to their family which comes from the great linage of the Poodle and Golden Retriever. They are wonderful with children, other pets and generally kind and gentle with strangers. They are very social dogs, especially when bred and raised in a family home and happiest when with people. Due to the Goldendoodle’s intelligence are likely to get into mischief and develop behavior problems if they spend too much time alone or unexercised. Their intelligence, (remember since they are a hybrid between to of the most intelligent breeds there are) eagerness to please, and love of learning make them very easy to train. They can be small, medium and large sized family dogs depending on your own circumstances and desires with the most wonderful disposition. Goldendoodle and Mini Goldendoodle require at least a moderate amount of exercise and their coats are generally low maintenance. They can live in the city in a high-rise condominium or apartment or in the suburbs with a nice yard to play in. They are very friendly and happiest when they are with people. The life expectancy is can run from 14 to 16 years. As a hybrid cross (sometimes called a “mixed-breed”, Goldendoodle and Mini Goldendoodle will have hair/fir that can look retriever-like, or poodle-like, but generally is something in-between. They can have a dual coat with long “retriever” like fur and a shorter “curly” poodle like hair. As they are ‘back-bred” like the F1b, and F2b the hair becomes more consistently waive or curly. They should be brushed and combed every few days and the finer and curlier they are the more grooming they will require to minimize matting. Our Mini Goldendoodle have a fine curly coat and we even remove their collars when they are in the house to reduce the matting around their necks. We recommend bathing at least twice a month and weekly is better, but don’t fret bath-time it can be a lot of fun.
